In India, hopes at the start of the year that the outbreak may be subsiding in the vast nation of 1.3 billion people have been dashed in recent weeks as a fresh wave pushed the national total to 12.5 million infections and 165,000 deaths.

India ramped up its fight against coronavirus on Monday to try to dampen record-breaking daily infection rates, as Saudi Arabia said it would allow only immunised pilgrims into its holiest sites.
The pandemic has not abated despite more than 660 million jabs having been doled out across the world, with vaccine-manufacturing powerhouse India registering more than 100,000 cases in a single day for the first time and infections in Iran hitting a four-month high.
The latest outbreak in India is focused on Maharashtra state, home to financial hub Mumbai, which tightened its overnight curfew and closed restaurants and places of worship on weekends in response.
HERMISTON â Hermiston School District will open online registration for next year s kindergarten class on Monday, April 12.
Students eligible for kindergarten during the next school year are those who were born on or before Sept. 1, 2016.
Parents should start by filling out a registration form online at hermiston.k12.or.us/apps/pages/registration. Afterward, they will need to bring a birth record, proof of residence (such as a utility bill in the parent s name) and immunization records to the school where their child will attend.
The district will offer in-person registration assistance on Tuesday, April 20, and Thursday, April 22, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Parents can also call the district office at 541-667-6000 on weekdays if they have questions or issues.
